A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Clean Your New Piercing
To ensure a healthy healing process, it's crucial to keep your new piercing clean.
Here are the steps you should follow:
WASH your hands with soap and warm water thoroughly before touching your piercing or cleaning it.
NeilMed rinse your piercing as necessary while it's healing. For specific piercings, it may be easier to use clean gauze which has been saturated with saline solution.
Avoid moving or rotating the jewellery during the cleaning or rinsing process.
DRY the piercing area by gently patting it with clean, disposable paper products. Avoid using cloth towels, as they can trap bacteria and catch on the jewellery, resulting in injury.
Tips for Piercing Aftercare
Here are some simple things to keep in mind as you care for your new piercing:
What to do ...
Wash your hands before touching the piercing and only touch it when cleaning it.
Avoid rotating your jewellery during the healing process.
Exercise is okay but be mindful of how your body feels.
Keep your bedding clean and wear breathable clothing while you sleep.
Showers are preferable to baths, but if you must bathe, clean the tub thoroughly before use and rinse your piercing afterwards.
What not to do...
Do not use harsh products like alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, antibacterial soaps, iodine, or ointments, as they can damage cells and prevent necessary air circulation.
Avoid using products containing Benzalkonium Chloride (BZK), such as Bactine® or pierced ear care solutions, as they can be irritating and are not intended for long-term wound care.
Over-cleaning should be avoided, as it can delay healing and irritate the piercing.
Do not engage in activities that may cause undue trauma, such as friction from clothing, excessive motion of the area, playing with the jewellery, or vigorous cleaning, as these can cause complications such as scar tissue, migration, or prolonged healing.
During the healing period, avoid all oral contact, rough play, and contact with others' bodily fluids on or near the piercing.
Reduce stress and avoid recreational drug use, including excessive caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
Do not submerge the piercing in unhygienic bodies of water, such as lakes, pools, hot tubs, etc. Use a waterproof wound sealant bandage to protect the piercing if necessary.
Refrain from using any beauty or personal care products on or around the piercing, including cosmetics, lotions, and sprays, etc.
Do not hang charms or any object from the jewellery until the piercing is fully healed.
Avoid sleeping directly on a healing cartilage piercing, as it may cause irritation or shifts in the piercing's angle.
